What is Botox and the mechanism of action?
Botox is one of many brands in the UK used medically to treat certain muscular conditions and cosmetically to remove wrinkles by causing temporary paralysis of the underlying muscles. It is produced from the neurotoxin Botulinum Toxin Type A that is derived from Clostridium Botulinum, an organism found in the natural environment where it is largely inactive and non-toxic. Botox works by inhibiting the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine thereby reducing the contraction of the muscles that cause the un-desired effects like frown lines.
Botox is used to treat:
- Forehead (Horizontal) lines
- Glabellar lines (11's) / Frown lines
- Crow's feet lines
- Brow lift
- Bunny lines (Wrinkly nose)
- Gummy smile
- Smokers' lines
- Drooping mouth corners
- Dimply chin
- Wide-Set Jaw
- Neck Botox
- Marionette lines
